Freshman year is very competitive; freshman physics courses in particular. Brush up on your math. It's easier to be admitted relative to Ivy League schools; I used SAT scores (M-640, V-720) and O-Levels. The International Center has good support with Visa requirements and enquiries.I was fortunate enough to get funding from my home country.Mathematically rigourous in first 2 years, becoming more practical in 3rd & 4th year. I was studying fulltime, i.e. at least 80 hours per week. The best support comes from teaching assistants in 2nd year onwards. Effective 1st year assistance can be very hard to find due to the large student to teacher ratio. The tuition fee is a very good deal for Michigan residents, but international students might feel it's a bit too expensive for the Freshman year. I would recommend A Levels or AP credit to avoid the first year courses. There are 3 campuses and a free shuttle bus every 10-15 minutes or so. The town and Uni are intermeshed physically. There are plenty of Fast food outlets. I really enjoyed the sports events and marching band; they have remarkable talent there. On-campus accommodation was a bit too noisy at times, but when I stayed at Markley with the Football Team, they were very respectful of silence by turning down music when they saw me studying, making me a fan of the team forever. I would say the dorms are value for money, and part-time work is available in the kitchens there. The student Union has plenty of eateries. Student societies exist for most Asian countries. The strength of the U-M EE program lies in its professors and teaching assistants at the 3rd and 4th year and postgrad level courses. They whet your appetite and impart an appreciation of the subject and motivation to study more. It helps that the Uni has a lot of state-of-the-art lab equipment. I lost touch with many students (the 90s were before Facebook), but have joined the alumni association and linked up with those I recognised on Facebook later. Now I work as a Power Engineer, which is ironic because U-M did not have a Power Engineering program, so I went to grad school at UNSW that offered this, a decade after U-M, on my own funds.
