Choosing the right course is very important. That involves not just a well known university but also the subjects you will actually study. Different universities while offering the same degree might offer different subjects.

International Services will have brochures etc. for new students. Faculty and fellow students are a big help too.

Students are generally assigned counsellors before they even reach the country, so you should ask them to get you in touch with a reliable person who can maybe put you up for the first week, till you find own accomodation. Or you can also get in touch with the International Services Department. Read up about the city on wikipedia, check out the neighbourhoods near the univ. online and then check craigslist for room rents etc. A lot of students/working professionals advertise single rooms in apartments so that might be a good option. Campus is equipped with almost all food choices, convenience stores etc. etc. so if you don't feel comfortable venturing out in the beginning you can ask people to direct you to the required stores.
