The presence of several Indians in the school gives a much needed homely feel in a strange, new place. I would very strongly recommend the Duke MBA given the unlimited opportunities for learning, fun, friends, personal and professional development.

I wrote GMAT. Studied from prescribed books and took practice tests. I did not attend any coaching classes or counselor services. The visa interview was very easy. I used Jet Airways to fly to Durham, USA. Tickets were easily available and reasonably priced. There was no student discount, but the airline provided a free student kit that had several useful discount coupons and 1 extra bag was allowed (total of 3 bags of 23 kg each). I did not face any immigration issues. No Meet and Greet service was provided to me.

Scholarships are offered to few students and are based on merit alone.

I am very happy with the program structure. The professors are very good. The lecture halls, library and sports facilities are excellent.

A friend of mine and I are living in a 1000 sq. ft 2 bedroom apartment off campus. Most MBA students are too busy with coursework to attend part time jobs. Considering that Durham is only a small university town, the social scene and night life is reasonable. However, during the term, most people have very little time to make use of it. Opportunities for making friends among fellow students are limitless. Durham has 4 distinct seasons – from very hot in summer to very cold at winter (on the whole, it is pretty good compared to extremely cold northern American cities). There are several international student societies for different nationalities. The Indian club organizes events during Indian festivals such as Diwali.

The University has a Career Management Centre that assists in placements. There is a placement process in place, but the onus is more on the students. The university provides the tools, such as the alumni network and career resources, but it is left to the student to actually secure the jobs. The Universitys brand name is extremely highly valued in the US, compared to its ranking. Several organizations from various verticals hire Duke students for different geographies. The alumni network is very vast and can be leveraged effectively, but the onus lies with the student ultimately. To sum up, you get a fantastic brand name, great alumni network, access to the best organizations and it depends how good you are at making the most of it.
